Abstract
Today, urban management literature focuses on the relationships between individuals and places, and the role that specific elements of a place play in shaping, maintaining, and expressing the identity of individuals and groups. In the current context, sustainable development of new urban areas requires identifying the physical identity indicators of these areas to plan and implement projects that meet the needs of each region, considering the aspects of preserving and enhancing their identity features. Therefore, this study aims to examine the strategies of physical identity influencing sustainable development in new urban fabrics, using a descriptive-analytical method. This research is of an applied-developmental type and aims to identify the physical identity indicators affecting the sustainable urban development of District Six in Shiraz using a descriptive-analytical method. To identify the dimensions and variables affecting physical identity in new urban areas, qualitative methods (interviews) were used after a thorough review of written sources. In the next stage, to explain the dimensions and categorize the indicators, the statistical method of factor analysis was employed. In fact, this research is of a qualitative-quantitative type and has a theoretical and fundamental nature. The results indicate the impact of eleven indicators, subsets of activity dimensions and visual dimensions of physical identity, on various aspects of sustainable development in new urban fabrics, including environmental, social, economic, and resource sustainability. Additionally, the results show that the first factor (dimension) has the highest share (64/18%) in explaining the total variance of variables related to factors affecting the physical identity of District Six in Shiraz. The second dimension also explains (35/81%) of the dependent variable.
